CounterPULSE is one of San Francisco’s leading small venues for cutting-edge, interdisciplinary performance.  Our 90-seat studio theater hosts over 300 public events each year, ranging from dance, theater, and music performances to political discussions, community meetings, and feasts. The Theater Manager oversees operation of the theater and facilities.  This position requires both administrative management and hands-on maintenance.  The ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational skills and management experience, solid technical theater skills, and the desire to participate in shaping the evolving character of a lively and growing arts organization.  The Theater Manager reports to the Program Manager.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills with staff and with a diverse public; reliable access to telephone and email, and the ability to respond promptly
  • Experience working with and maintaining theater infrastructure, including lighting, sound, carpentry and rigging
  • Basic knowledge of lighting, sound, and video design
  • Strong ability to work independently and manage staff and volunteer labor
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively, maintaining a sense of humor and openness to unexpected situations
  • Comfort in a Macintosh environment; experience with spreadsheets is a plus

Expectations

  • General:
    • Participate in weekly staff meetings and seasonal programming
    • Conduct production meetings for each event
    • Attend and assist at all CounterPULSE-produced events
  • Scheduling & Supervision:
    • Schedule and contract technicians for each event
    • Orient technicians and clients to the theater, providing clear instructions and feedback
  • Technical & Facilities:
    • Monitor and maintain theater equipment, overseeing repairs when necessary
    • Maintain an annual budget for theater and facilities costs
    • Maintain and improve theater signage, storage, and documentation systems
    • Supervise and participate in shared facility upkeep tasks
    • Execute other duties as assigned

Compensation

  • Salaried, exempt half-time position (approx. 20 hrs/week)
